Graphic design is one of the most important professions in our society and we should educate ourselves on what it entails. Graphic Designers are one of the driving forces behind how we experience life today. From logos to print ads, from websites to video games, graphic designers have played a significant role in shaping our world and giving form to the things that entertain us, inform us, and generally make up our lives. Graphic design can be used for everything from designing a new shoebox or cereal package to helping create an entire theme park environment or even designing a city’s identity system such as its logo and signage program.

1. It’s a Process, Not a Product

One of the most important things to understand about graphic design is that it is not just creating pretty pictures for people to look at. Graphic designers have an entire process they go through from start to finish in order to complete a design. The process begins with the initial briefing between the designer and the client, where they discuss what it is that they need to be designed. If it’s a website then this would include information about how many pages there are to the site, if it’s an ad campaign then this includes background information about what company is advertising and so on.

After this process has been completed the designer begins their research and exploration which includes looking at other designs that have been done before as well as through sketching and brainstorming. Then they begin ‘roughing it up’, where they start to create rough sketches of ideas for how they might go about doing the design.

From here they move to ‘refining’, where they take the rough sketches and see which parts work best with each other in order to create a final design. This then goes to their team for any last-minute edits before it is sent off to print or whatever medium they are making the design for.

2. Communication Skills Are Essential

Graphic designers are not only artists, they are also very good communicators. Since a big part of what they do is working with clients from all over the world, regardless if they are from Brisbane or Prague, and figuring out exactly what it is that their client needs from the design, graphic designers need to be able to clearly communicate ideas as well as listen to those of other people.

They need excellent problem-solving skills as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills. A graphic designer can make something look really cool but if they can’t explain what it is, or why it is the way that it is, then all of their hard work will be for nothing!

3. It’s an Exciting Career with Lots of Opportunities

Graphic design is an exciting career path with lots of opportunities. People who specialize in this field can work for a number of different types of companies and organizations, including, advertising agencies, banks, and financial institutions, book publishers, magazines and newspapers, corporate communications departments, fashion houses, and clothing manufacturers just to name a few!

Because this is a growing field, there are many different types of jobs that can be obtained in the industry, including Art Director and Creative Director.

4. It Requires Creativity & Passion

Finally, one of the most important things to know about graphic design is that it requires a lot of creativity and passion. It’s not just about drawing pretty pictures, it takes a lot of thinking and problem solving to come up with the best solution for any given design challenge.

Graphic designers need to be able to think outside of the box as well as know when sticking with traditional methods works the best. They need to feel inspired and excited by their work and most importantly they need to love what they do!
